resurrection is to import ideas not supported by this context.64 The apostle stated his reason for raising this issue in v. 13b. Paul’s statement (which the NIV introduces with “or”) is a negative purpose (hina mē, “lest”) clause: he did not want the believers to be ignorant so that they who have the hope of resurrection might not grieve (lupēsthe) as unbelievers “who have no hope” (v. 13b).65 The difference between the two groups is not that unbelievers grieve and Christians ought not grieve.
